Tasneem Shatat is the co-creator of the Gaza Biennale. She began this project as an artist-in-residence with the Al Risan Art Museum (the Forbidden Museum) in April of 2024. Her time as a resident artist with the museum led her to develop the concept of bringing together artists from all over Gaza to create some kind of international art event. This led to the creation of the Gaza Biennale as a way to reckon with the state of art in our world today. She has been tirelessly organizing and curating the biennale from Gaza throughout the war and through multiple displacements.

Tasneem will also be presenting an exhibition for the biennale with Al Risan Art Museum based on her visions, observations, and experiences surviving the war, and plans to publish a booklet alongside the exhibition titled I and We, Displaced to document her war experiences for future generations.

Tasneem Shatat is a mathematics graduate with honors. Despite her keen interest in fields such as genetic engineering, astronomy, and archaeology, she chose to pursue mathematics and took courses in psychology, sociology, and first aid. She worked on independent projects and collaborated with local institutions, where she gained widespread recognition for her organizational skills and great ambition. During the war, in which she was displaced twice, she became involved with the Al-Risan Art Museum (also known as the Forbidden Museum), where she began to document her personal feelings and experiences. She plans to publish a booklet entitled “The Journey of the Displaced” to document her experiences of war for future generations.

During her school years, in art class, she would imagine painting a meaningful and impactful work of art: a blank canvas with only a red line in the middle.

Tasneem says that her involvement with the Al-Risan Art Museum became her lifeline during the war, keeping her mind off the news and nourishing her intellect and personality through continuous learning. The museum has become an integral part of her life. She considers it her home and one of her dreams that she hopes to realize after the war ends. When she started with the museum, she took the initiative to collect 100 stories from 100 people in Gaza, then moved on to coordinating with Gaza artists and arranging meetings via Zoom. Today, she continues to work on organizing the biennial, hoping that it will be a success because it was born from the heart of death.

She also documents her feelings and experiences during the war, such as how she felt when she was displaced and when she returned to her home (which she considers the best moment she has ever experienced), as well as her realization that 1948 is no longer just a historical memory but is repeating itself in reality. She documents everything she sees and hopes to learn artistic photography to capture images that match her ideas. She has collected many drawings and some photographs that may not be accurate, but they will remain etched in her memory and will not be forgotten.

She plans to create a small booklet entitled “The Journey of the Displaced” that includes an account of what she experienced during the war and the events she went through, both with people and as a result of the war itself, so that they will never be forgotten. Each story will have a picture to express it, and future generations will be able to read it out of curiosity, humanity, or to document what has not been recorded.

تسنيم شتات هي إحدى الأطراف المشاركة في تأسيس بينالي غزة. بدأت هذا المشروع كفنانة مقيمة مع متحف الريسان للفنون (المتحف المحظور) في أبريل من عام 2024م. أفضى الوقت الذي قضته كفنانة مقيمة في المتحف إلى تطوير مفهوم الجمع بين الفنانين من جميع أنحاء غزة لإقامة حدث فني على مستوى دولي. وأثمر عن ذلك إنشاء بينالي غزة كوسيلة لتقييم حالة الفن في عالمنا اليوم. ما تزال تسنيم تعمل بلا كلل ولا ملل لإطلاق البينالي من غزة طوال الحرب وأثناء عمليات النزوح المتعددة.

ستشارك تسنيم شتات في البينالي بمعرض بالتعاون مع متحف الريسان للفنون، يستند محتواه إلى تجاربها الشخصية ورؤاها بشأن النجاة من الحرب. كما تخطط لإصدار كتيب بعنوان “أنا ونحن نازحون“، يوثق تجاربها الحربية بهدف توثيق هذه التجارب للأجيال القادمة.

تسنيم شتات خريجة رياضيات مع مرتبة الشرف. رغم اهتمامها الكبير بمجالات مثل الهندسة الوراثية وعلم الفلك وعلم الآثار، إلا أنها اختارت متابعة دراسة الرياضيات وأخذت دورات في علم النفس وعلم الاجتماع والإسعافات الأولية. عملت في مشاريع مستقلة وتعاونت مع مؤسسات محلية، حيث اكتسبت تقديرًا واسعًا لمهاراتها التنظيمية وطموحها الكبير. خلال الحرب التي نزحت خلالها مرتين، انخرطت في متحف الريسان للفنون (المعروف أيضًا بالمتحف المحظور)، حيث بدأت في توثيق مشاعرها وتجاربها الشخصية. وهي تخطط لإصدار كتيب بعنوان “رحلة نازحين” لتوثيق تجاربها في الحرب للأجيال القادمة.

خلال سنوات دراستها، وفي حصص الفن، كانت تتخيل أنها ترسم عمل فني هادف ومؤثّر، لوحة قماشية فارغة تحتوي فقط على خط أحمر في المنتصف.

تقول تسنيم أن مشاركتها في متحف الريسان للفنون أصبح بمثابة شريان الحياة لها خلال فترة الحرب، إذ كان يشغل وقتها بعيدًا عن الأخبار، ويغذي عقليتها وشخصيتها من خلال التعلم المستمر. أصبح المتحف جزءًا لا يتجزأ منها، وتعتبره بيتها وأحد أحلامها التي تأمل في تحقيقها بعد انتهاء الحرب. عندما بدأت مع المتحف، بادرت في جمع مئة قصة من مئة شخص في غزة، ثم انتقلت إلى التنسيق مع فناني غزة وترتيب اجتماعات عبر منصة زوم. واليوم، تواصل العمل على تنظيم البينالي، على أمل أن يحقق النجاح لأنه وُلد من قلب الموت.

كما تقوم بتوثيق مشاعرها وتجاربها خلال الحرب، مثل شعورها عند النزوح وعند العودة إلى منزلها (التي تعتبرها أفضل لحظة عاشتها على الإطلاق)، وكذلك إدراكها أن عام 1948م لم يعد مجرد ذكرى تاريخية بل بات يعيد نفسه في الواقع. توثق كل ما تراه، وتأمل أن تتعلم التصوير الفني لالتقاط الصور التي تتوافق مع أفكارها. لقد جمعت الكثير من الرسومات وبعض الصور التي قد لا تكون دقيقة، ولكنها ستظل محفورة في الذاكرة ولن تُنسى.

تخطط لإنشاء كتيب صغير بعنوان “رحلة نازحين” يتضمن سردًا لما عاشته في الحرب، والأحداث التي مرت بها سواء مع الناس أو نتيجة الحرب نفسها، حتى لا تُنسى أبدًا. سيكون لكل قصة صورة تعبر عنها، ويمكن للأجيال القادمة قراءتها بدافع الفضول أو الإنسانية أو لتوثيق ما لم يتم تسجيله.
