GAZA BIENNALE GREEK PAVILION PRESS RELEASE
GAZA BIENNALE GREEK PAVILION PRESS RELEASE
From the 18th of September until the 4th of November, Lofos Art Project has the honor to present the exhibition “In the Line of Fire. Miracles amidst Ruins – The Gaza Biennale, Greek Pavilion”, comprised of selected artworks created by artists that live and work in Gaza during the Genocide or originate from Gaza, curated by Faye Tzanetoulakou and Dimitris Sarafianos.
The exhibition is dedicated to the resilience of Palestinian art in the face of ongoing violence and its priceless role in rebuilding the cultural identity of Palestinian land and its people, in response to Genocide. The title of the exhibition is a call to action, recognizing the untold suffering and trauma of the Palestinian people.
In this setting of violence, destruction and apathy, the importance of creating art under the most extreme circumstances will be explored, posing profound questions: What does it mean to make art when entire communities disappear? What does the murder of artists and the destruction of cultural heritage reveal about the world we live in? And, most importantly, how does art offer hope in times of unparalleled misery? The presented artworks were created during the Genocide by artists witnessing the worst horrors humankind could imagine. Defying all challenges, artists have been working, confronting unimaginable difficulties and creating works that remind us that art is essential to life and to our survival as a species.
Lofos will host the Greek Pavilion of the Gaza Biennale, a collective project consisting of 14 Pavilions worldwide. The opening will take place on Thursday 18th of September at 19:30.
In April 2024, artists from Gaza began to gather under a single project tracing ways to utilize art so as to survive the Genocide. A collective project emerged: Founded in Palestine and realized in multiple places worldwide, the Gaza Biennale is a global exhibition. Its organization consists of artists and curators in Gaza and the Forbidden Museum from Al Risan Mountain, Palestine. Through its nature as a decentralized exhibition it calls into action a global movement, so as to lift the siege of Gaza through art. The project upholds the fundamental right of a people to exist with dignity in their land. Despite the sorrow and pain brought by the circumstances, and amid the scent of death, artists in Gaza plant seeds of hope for humanity, not only in Gaza but across the world. Gaza will continue to rise again and again, just as humanity and art maintain a perpetual rebirth. No war can stop the dreams of dreamers, and no mechanisms of domination can extinguish the light in the hearts and minds of art creators.
Gaza Biennale is a call to action for the world, artists and cultural institutions, to ensure that these voices and stories remain alive, works that are a testament to struggle and resilience, illuminating a path for humanity, in its most difficult moment of our time.
