The Utility of Beauty “Jadwa Al Jamal”
Ibrahim Al Sultan
Born 1990 in Gaza, Palestine
Displaced in Nablus
Beauty, as an abstract idea and one of the absolute values, stems from a human relationship with their surroundings and their interaction with others, humans, animals, plants, or even ideas and thoughts from other people. What a person perceives as beautiful from their environment, and embodies an absolute value, must have a purpose or utility for its existence. Its value and form merge together to become one entity. Thus, when we search for the utility of what embodies beauty, we are essentially searching for the utility of beauty itself.
Al Sultan has created an exhibition that goes to the heart of the question of art in this moment defined by genocide. His work is direct, esoteric, and contradictory. Al Sultan interrogates the essence and possibility of beauty itself, presenting a series of photographs, a poem in fragments, and two foreboding and monumental paintings.
Ibrahim Ali Al-Sultan is a Palestinian artist from Gaza who has gained some notoriety for his unique natural and intellectual vision. His ambition in the arts is evident through his active participation in numerous workshops and cultural activities within Gaza. Al-Sultan works across various artistic disciplines, including abstract art, writing, acting, dancing, music, and sculpting.
Since childhood, Al-Sultan has used art to express his feelings and thoughts. He has thrived in collaborative environments and civil initiatives, winning first place in the Gaza High Schools Beautifying project. His presence at the French Institute in Gaza was remarkable not only for his academic excellence but also for his innovative contributions to music and theatrical writing. He wrote the screenplay for a film for the Cofidio Art Festival, although the challenging circumstances in Gaza hindered the realization of many of his artistic projects, including this film.
In 2023, Ibrahim expanded his skill set by participating in a sculpting workshop conducted by the Dar-Alkalema University Training Center in Gaza. He has also made significant contributions to literature, recently launching his book Human Identity, a collection of his poems, essays, and art, which is set to be published in Europe and the United States.
For Al-Sultan, art is not a journey towards a concrete destination but a spiritual environment. He believes that art combines the personality and spirit of the artist with those of the viewer, making the creation of any artwork an eternal process that continues as it is experienced by different people over time.
Through his diverse artistic endeavors, Al-Sultan aims to convey a message of peace and tranquility, hoping these concepts will resonate with and inspire humanity worldwide.
