Since April 2024, artists from Gaza began to gather together under a single project, to find ways to utilize art to resist this genocide. Many artists in Gaza have been working throughout this war, defying all challenges, creating works that remind us that art is essential to life and our survival as a species. A collective project has emerged into a global art event, the Gaza Biennale.

The significance of this project lies in its ability to place art at the forefront of a global awakening, to challenge the art field to reckon with the weight of genocide, and to present a model of resilience, and fulfill a desperate need to recognize that the depth and complexity of human life. The right of a people to exist with dignity on their land is fundamental to the purpose of art itself. The work we present goes beyond breaking news, media coverage, and statistics. Despite the sorrow and pain brought by the circumstances, and amid the scent of death, artists in Gaza plant seeds of hope for humanity, not only in Gaza but across the world, through creativity and innovation.

The Gaza Biennale marks a creative step outside the traditional frameworks of exhibitions. It reflects the sensitivity and specificity of our situation, making it an urgent and exceptional event. At the heart of the artistic purpose is the struggle of a people to survive.

The Gaza Biennale is a collective event, a growing network, and perhaps a movement. While war has scattered and displaced our people, the biennale gathers over 40 artists on a single platform, uniting their voices.

Emerging from deep roots, this Biennale extends an open invitation to local and international institutions to host and produce these exhibitions and to work with us as partners. We offer a unique opportunity to art institutions to exhibit invaluable works that reflect the need for creativity in the darkest of times.

Can the art world turn its attention to the reality of Gaza today? Should Gaza’s artists create art under the weight of genocide? Will the art world honor this work rather than exploit it? These are the questions this project contends with.

This biennale proposes new rules of engagement within the context of art. The stakes are too high to wait for the appraisal from some established framework. At the same time we are witnessing the failure of institutional frameworks to prevent the desecration of human life. So from these cracks and disingenuous policies, we are stepping forward on our own accord, creating work that speaks with a force that cannot be denied. Each artist, each artwork, each exhibition exists despite the impossible reality from which it is born, as its material forms emerge in its defiance.

With the near total destruction of artworks, monuments, museums, mosques, churches, and cultural heritage sites, how can we reclaim what is lost? There is much to accomplish, and this biennale is only the beginning, as Gaza will continue to begin again and again, just as humanity and art is a perpetual rebirth.

We represent a future realized from the very best of what humanity has to offer: the power to transcend the worst of humanity through creativity, and our capacity to witness the worst parts of our collective behavior in order to build a better world.

This biennale is a unique event unlike any previous biennale. We invite viewers to look deep into themselves, to learn from the struggle, and to bow in humility before the fragility of life on this earth.

دير البلح، غزة، 20 نوفمبر 2024- منذ أبريل 2024، يقوم فنانون من غزة والضفة الغربية على تطوير أفكار فنية لمعارض بالتعاون مع أكثر من 50 فنانة من غزة. يواصل هؤلاء الفنانين ممارساتهم في خضّم الحرب، متحدّين كل الظروف الصعبة. وقد أفضت تجاربهم إلى تدخلات عميقة في الفن والحياة، مجسدّين محاولات بطولية في وجه الإبادة التي تفني شعب بأكمله على مرأى العالم أجمع. أثمرت المناقشات المستمرة بين الفنانين والمنظمين إلى مشروع جماعي تحت مسمى “بينالي غزة”، وهو حدث فني عالمي يحمل رسائل لا تحتمل الانتظار ولا بد للعالم أن يفقها.

يعمل الفنانون في غزة تحت القصف ملتزمين بممارساتهم كوسيلة للبقاء. كطائر الفينيق الذي ينبعث من تحت الأنقاض، ينهض كل عمل فني فوق الدمار. تنبض هذه الروح بقوة تفوق صدى القنابل، فالتمسك بالإنسانية هو سلاح في وجه الفناء.

تتجلى أهمية هذا المشروع في توثيقه للحياة تحت وطأة الإبادة، حيث يمثل نموذجًا للبقاء يلهمنا كمتفرجين عاجزين. يسائل الفن الأسئلة الصعبة ويُسرد قصصًا تتجاوز حدود الأخبار العاجلة والإعلام والإحصاءات. فرغم ما تحمله الظروف من حزن وألم، وبينما تفوح رائحة الموت، يزرع الفنان في غزة بذور الإنسانية، ليس فقط في غزة، بل في سائر أنحاء العالم، عسى أن يتحرك شيء ما بداخلنا وننأى بأنفسنا عن الشاشات لنستبدل الشعارات بالأفعال والابداع والابتكار.

يرتبط بينالي غزة بنضال الشعب الفلسطيني ويأتي في صميم المسعى الفني، وهو خطوة فنية خارج الأطر التقليدية للمعارض، كما يعكس حساسية موقفنا وخصوصيته، مما يجعله حدثًا ملحًا واستثنائيًا.

بينالي غزة هو حدث جماعي وليس مجرد معرضًا للفنون؛ بل هو شبكة، وربما حراك يحمل في طياته الأمل. بينما شتتت الحرب أهلنا في القطاع، تجمّع الفنانون في غزة على منصة واحدة، موحدين أصواتهم. يمثل بينالي غزة معرضًا فنيًا دوليًا يضم اكثر من 50 فنانة، يجابه كل منهم بإبداعه المعاناة الفردية والمشتركة إثر الإبادة الجماعية المستمرة.

نحن في مرحلة إنتاج الأعمال وتوثيق مسيرة الفنانين، فضلًا عن تطوير منصات لعرض إبداعاتهم. ينبثق بينالي غزة من الجذور، لذا، نوجّه دعوة مفتوحة للمؤسسات المحلية والدولية لاستضافة وإنتاج هذه المعارض والعمل معنا كشركاء (على نحوٍ رسمي أو عدا ذلك). نقدم فرصة فريدة للمؤسسات الفنية حول العالم لعرض أعمال لا تُقدّر بثمن، تعكس معاناة الإبداع في هذه الأوقات الأشد ظلمة.

هل سيلتفت عالم الفن لواقع غزة اليوم؟ هل ينبغي لفناني غزة أن ينتجوا فنًا تحت ثقل الإبادة الجماعية؟ وهل سيستخدم عالم الفن أعمالهم أو يستغلها؟ هذه بعض الأسئلة التي يطرحها الفنانون في غزة. يمثل هذا البينالي مشروعًا جماعيًا يتجلى فيه الإبداع رغم الظروف المستحيلة.

يقترح هذا البينالي قواعد جديدة للتفاعل في سياق الفن، حيث لا يُقيَّم العمل الفني من منظور علوي. تتهاوى كل القواعد التقليدية اليوم بينما يشهد العالم الفشل الذريع للمؤسسات والحكومات في حماية الحياة البشرية. ومن هذه التصدعات في واجهة السياسات الاستعمارية، نخطو قدمًا نحو مستقبل أكثر إنسانية.

هل يمكن أن تصبح الخيمة مساحة عرض؟ أو تمثالًا بحد ذاته؟ وماذا عن كل الأعمال الفنية، والآثار، والمتاحف، والمساجد، والكنائس، والتراث الثقافي وكل ما دمرته آلة الحرب؟ كيف نستعيد ما فقدناه؟ أمامنا الكثير لننجزه، وهذا البينالي ليس سوى البداية لإبراز الحياة والإبداع غي غزة العزة.

يبرز هذا البينالي كحدث فريد لا يشبه أي بينالي سابق. ندعو المشاهد إلى استكشاف أعماق نفسه، ليتعلم من النضال، وينحني تواضعًا أمام وهن الحياة على هذه الأرض. يصوغ هؤلاء الفنانين دروبًا نحو عالم عليه أن يعيد رؤية ذاته ويحتفي بجماله المفقود.

لمواجهة السرديات التي تؤجج حروب الإبادة، لقد آن الأوان لأن ننصت إلى أصوات الناجين ليس بوصفهم ضحايا، فلولاهم ما نحن إلا أجساد جوفاء. علينا الاستعداد لمواجهة هذه اللحظة، الأمر الذي يتطلب الغوص في أعماق أنفسنا وتجاربنا الإنسانية، ونحن مدينون لهؤلاء الفنانين بشق هذا المسار. إن عمق التجربة الإنسانية هو بوصلتنا، والمعرفة التي تكتسبها الشعوب في نضالها من أجل العيش بكرامة هي أغلى ما نملك.
